# Giving the Knowledge Model Governed Structure

April 12, 2026. I am bringing entity relationships, enterprise types, temporal validity, APQC process structure, local classification, unified search routing, and chunk-level semantic search into the same knowledge model. The question is no longer simply whether VALESKA can find relevant material. It is whether a result can carry enough context to explain what it represents, where it belongs, and why it was returned.

## Relationships need more than labels

Enterprise material is rarely useful as a flat collection. A document may describe a process, support a project, refer to a system, belong to a business unit, and remain valid only during a particular period. Treating those connections as loose tags makes retrieval easier to start, but difficult to trust later. I am adding explicit types and relationships so that those links can be recorded, examined, and revised as the record changes.

Time is part of that model. A classification or relationship can be true for one period and misleading for another. Temporal validity gives the platform a way to retain the history of a decision without pretending that an earlier description remains current. The APQC tree provides a stable process vocabulary; local classifications let a particular organization add the terms that matter in its own work.

## Search has to preserve the reason

The retrieval work joins two complementary paths. Unified search can bring together records found through different services. Chunk-level semantic search can locate the part of a long document that bears on a question. Neither is sufficient by itself. A useful result must still point back to the source record, its classification, its relationships, and the period in which that information applies.

This is why the model has to be governed before it is presented as intelligence. A fluent answer may be useful, but it cannot be the only account of how a record was selected. The platform needs to retain the evidence path that lets a later reader ask whether the relationship, classification, or retrieved passage was appropriate.

## What I will test next

The next step is to use this model through real retrieval tasks: a reader should be able to move from a search result to its source, see the relevant relationship and process context, and understand when that context is current. The test is not whether the system can produce an impressive summary. It is whether the structure helps someone investigate a real question without losing the basis for the answer.

**Historical basis:** This entry is dated to the April 12, 2026 repository milestone, commits `6076ed0, 2b9ac0e, 4f2bf81, d94ae1b`, which record entity and relationship work, enterprise and temporal types, APQC and local classification, unified routing, and chunk-level semantic search.
