# Beginning a Visual Evidence Collection

In February 2026, VALESKA begins gathering and organizing visual material so images can become evidence that can be described, found, and connected to the work around them.

February 8, 2026. I am beginning to collect visual material as a first-class part of the VALESKA evidence base. The work starts with a practical collector and organizer for images. The immediate task is simple: gather material from defined sources, keep it in a usable order, and make the collection available for closer examination.

This is not yet a claim that images are understood automatically. It is a decision to stop treating them as an unstructured residue around the documents and systems that describe a project. A visual record can hold details that a title, a filename, or a short text note does not preserve.

## Collect before trying to interpret

The first version focuses on collection and organization. It establishes a repeatable way to bring visual material into one place without losing its source or its relationship to the surrounding work. That distinction matters. Before an image can be searched meaningfully, its provenance and context need somewhere to live.

I am also leaving room for richer narrative fields. The aim is to let a collection carry more than a flat folder structure: subjects, themes, and the beginnings of a vocabulary that can later support retrieval. The structure is exploratory, but it is deliberate.

## A visual collection changes the scope of the question

VALESKA has been concerned with how an organization retains the knowledge embedded in work. Images extend that question. A photograph, a reference frame, a diagram, or a production artifact can contain evidence that is difficult to capture in conventional metadata. If it remains isolated, that evidence cannot take part in the wider memory of the work.

The collector is therefore a starting point for a larger line of investigation: how visual material can be described faithfully, connected to a domain vocabulary, and retrieved alongside documents and process records. The answers will require testing, not assumption.

## What comes next

The next steps are to add more sources, introduce richer narrative description, and test whether the collection can support useful categories without flattening what makes each image distinct. For now, the important result is more basic: visual evidence has a place in the architecture, and the place is being built with repeatability in mind.

**Historical basis:** This entry is dated to the February 8, 2026 repository milestone, commit `e408f06`, which records the first SwarmUI image collector and organizer script. It is based on that contemporaneous implementation and the subsequent February collection-expansion records.
